Did President Donald Trump’s “covfefe” Twitter typo actually have a secret meaning? Reports that the mysterious typo actually translates to “I will stand up” in Arabic are false. “Covfefe” is nothing more than a viral social media gaffe, not a covert message of solidarity.
According to Snopes, rumors of the secret meaning behind Trump’s since-deleted tweet began circulating in the days following the Twitter typo seen ’round the world. The rumor intensified after White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump and “a small group of people” actually knew the meaning behind the bizarre tweet. (Spicer has made plenty of social media slip-ups himself.)
Many were convinced that instead of “covfefe” being some sort of a misspelling of “coverage,” Trump meant to tweet, “Despite the constant negative press I will stand up.” Of course, “covfefe” is not an Arabic word and Trump was not attempting to secretly show solidarity against terrorism. The American-Arab Anto-Discrimination Committee confirmed that it was not a real translation on Twitter.

After the tweet went viral, Urban Dictionary jokingly defined “covfefe” as, “When you want to say ‘coverage’ but your hands are too small to hit all the letters on your keyboard.” Early Wednesday morning, hours after the typo was first sent, Trump attempted to make light of the mistake, writing on Twitter, “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ??? Enjoy!”
Social media users couldn’t help but joke about the typo. Amusing ideas ranged from an “alternative spelling” to Trump falling asleep mid-tweet. A satire article purported that “covfefe” was actually a secret nuclear code and, by tweeting it, Trump compromised national security. Of course, that claim was false.
