Jurassic World rebooted the franchise which had three prior films. The follow-up, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom suggests that fans could be seeing a new trilogy with Kingdom set to be the dark middle chapter. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed “Jurassic World” but handed over the reins to J.A. Bayona for the sequel, returns to produce and co-write the new film with Derek Connolly.
Speaking with Sebas Tabany’s YouTube Channel, Trevorrow confirmed plans for this to be a trilogy:
“I knew where I wanted it to go. I remember telling Steven [Spielberg] even while we were making the first movie,’“This is the beginning. Here is the middle. And here’s the end of the end. This is where we want to go.
I feel like that kind of design is crucial to a franchise like this if you really want to bring people along with you and make sure they stay interested. It needs to be thought through on that level. It can’t be arbitrary, especially if we want to turn this into a character-based franchise with people who you lean in to follow what they’re going to do.
At the end of this movie, it’s not a cliffhanger, but it’s designed for people to want to know what’s going to happen next, whereas the earlier Jurassic Park movies had pretty clear definitive endings. They were much more episodic. In working with Derek Connolly, my co-writer, we were also thinking about where it was gonna go in the future.”
Jurassic Park was more of a stand-alone film and did not necessitate a sequel, making the follow-ups less essential. But Jurassic World has a larger overarching narrative in mind. He also addressed concerns that the film is seemingly too closely resembling Steven Spielberg’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” in its narrative judging by what we glimpsed on the first trailer recent:
“It looks like it is because they all go to a fog-covered, scary island with dinosaurs on it, but it goes to a very, very different place than anyone expects. Really the heart and soul of the movie, the turn of the story, is not what we’ve shown in this trailer. It’s very much not like The Lost World.
The first film is about how if there’s money on the table, there will be somebody who will do the worst imaginable things, or in a lot of case, the dumbest imaginable thing in order to get that money. This film focuses a little bit more on our responsibility for these animals that we’ve made as a result of that greed, but also just the darkest and worst instincts of humans, again, if there’s money involved.”
In the film, Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing has founded an organization called “Dinosaur Protection Group,” enlisting the help of new characters played by Daniella Pineda and Justice Smith.
Their mission is “finding a way to get these dinosaurs off the island” as an active volcano threatens to make the animals go extinct, again. Pratt and Howard are joined by co-stars James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, while BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles from the first film in the series.
Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible), the epic action-adventure is written by Jurassic World’s director, Trevorrow, and its co-writer, Derek Connolly. Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley once again partner with Spielberg and Trevorrow in leading the team of filmmakers for this stunning installment. Belén Atienza joins the team as a producer.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set for release on June 22, 2018.
