Matt Damon ‘In Hiding’ Following Sexual Misconduct Comments About Harvey Weinstein Is False

Matt Damon “in hiding” after receiving strong backlash on social media for his recent comments about sexual misconduct between individuals like Harvey Weinstein and Al Franken is fake news. There is no truth to a report that the actor is keeping a low profile rather than doing promotion for his new movie, “Downsizing” because of the backlash he received from his sexual misconduct opinion.

Where did this fake news originate? While Damon indeed skipped the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Downsizing, the National Enquirer falsely reported that the absence was due to the recent backlash that Damon received for his opinions on the repercussions for those being accused of sexual misconduct. The National Enquirer claims that the actor canceled his appearance because he wants to avoid the spotlight following the negative backlash, but that’s not the case.

However, Gossip Cop reported that Damon’s absence was due to his dad being ill. A rep for Paramount Pictures also noted that the actor was out of town “dealing with an ongoing family matter.” Additionally, the National Enquirer does not offer any source to back up its assertion. The tabloid jumped to a conclusion based on recent events, but the article’s account of the situation is incorrect.

Damon was slammed by many people, including #MeToo champion Alyssa Milano and ex-girlfriend and former Good Will Hunting co-star Minnie Driver. The wide-ranging interview was picked apart by feminists who derided his “mansplaining” and by women and men who saw him minimizing certain kinds of predation. But the focal point of collective anger — reflected on social media and in headlines afterward — fixated on Damon’s interpretation of the word “spectrum.”

“I do believe that there’s a spectrum of behavior, right?” Damon said in his sit-down with Peter Travers. “And we’re going to have to figure — you know, there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right? Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated, right?”

He later said:

“And on this end of the continuum where you have rape and child molestation or whatever, you know, that’s prison. Right? And that’s what needs to happen. OK? And then we can talk about rehabilitation and everything else. That’s criminal behavior, and it needs to be dealt with that way. The other stuff is just kind of shameful and gross.”

Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.

The cast also includes Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds), Hong Chau (Inherent Vice, Treme), and Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers, Saturday Night Live). Downsizing was directed by two-time Oscar-winner Alexander Payne (Nebraska, The Descendants, Sideways) from a screenplay by Payne and Jim Taylor. Downsizing arrives in theaters on December 22, 2017.
