Is the cast of “Downton Abbey” preparing to shoot the movie for the period drama in mid-2018? Phyllis Logan, who played housekeeper Mrs Hughes, is suggesting that “Downtown Abbey” fans are getting closer to a film for the ITV period drama. She said that the case have been asked about their respective diaries, which can surely only mean the crew are trying to schedule in a production time.
Speaking with the Mail on Sunday, Logan revealed that producers have been in touch with the show’s cast and trying to figure out their schedules for a potential shooting block:
“Everyone’s been asked what’s going on between this date and that date. So we just hope that all the elements – because there are so many – come together. To have a last hurrah with all the characters, going back to the castle and seeing all the old muckers will be fantastic. I’m certainly up for it.”
Logan also confirmed that a new script for the project is in the works. “There’s a potential script coming our way, slightly rewritten,” she said.
The paper also reports that dates in the summer have already been selected for some interiors filming including Highclere Castle in Berkshire which is scheduled for closure in the first week of June. NBC Universal International Studios president Michael Edelstein has also indicated a 2018 shoot is likely.
“There’s a movie in the works. It’s been in the works for some time,” he said. “We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

Previously, Downton Abbey’s creator Julian Fellowes hinted that a prequel with a new cast could be a possibility. But Logan’s words suggest this almost certainly is not the plan. With the series having ended in 1926, there is a possibility that the characters would explore a time during the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and the rise of Nazism in the 1930s.
The series came to an end in 2015 after six seasons, but fans and those involved have been talking of a film for the past few years and early plans to shoot in 2017 were scuttled.
This British drama series follows the lives of the Crawley family and its servants in the family’s classic Georgian country house. The series begins with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which leaves Downton Abbey’s future in jeopardy, since the presumptive heirs of Robert, Earl of Grantham — his cousin James, and James’ son, Patrick — die in the catastrophe, leaving the family without a male offspring to take over Downton when the current lord dies. The point is important since Lord Grantham’s children are daughters — Ladies Mary, Edith and Sybil, but the facets of their lives and of those of the below-stairs staff — also a highly regimented world — have fascinating story lines.
