President Donald Trump reinstated a day of commemoration for fallen police, which had been cancelled by former President Barack Obama is false. Where did this false claim originate? In May 2017, Hyperpartisan web sites published the false claim that Obama had cancelled Peace Officers Memorial Day and that Trump brought it back. This claim circulated social media.
Several hyperpartisan web sites reported that Trump had “reinstated” a day of commemoration for fallen police officers, after it was purportedly cancelled by his predecessor. In one example, the USA For Americans web site published on May 6, 2017, the following claim.
Obama didn’t want to offend anyone, so our country’s heroes were shut out. not anymore.
President Trump made Barack Obama look like a complete fool this morning in front of more than 10,000 police veterans when he announced that he would reinstate a national day of remembrance for fallen officers that the traitor before him had done away with.
Similar versions of the above story then also appeared on TheExaminer.site and Guerilla.news, which is also known as Guerilla Patriots. Peace Officers Memorial Day, as it is properly known, falls on May 15. It was never cancelled or curtailed by Obama, so the premise of these articles is entirely false.
In the following video, Obama delivers remarks on Peace Officers Memorial Day in 2015.
Obama did the same in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Furthermore, every version of the article includes the following quotation from Trump that is totally fabricated, according to Snopes.
Police officers in this country will no longer be treated like criminals. Obama decided your fallen didn’t deserve to be honored. That changes today. Americans will remember those that keep our streets safe big time.
Rather, Trump has never said the above false quote. Nor did he address “more than 10,000 police veterans” on May 6, 2017. However, Trump did make a speech at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on May 15, 2017, which you can watch here. In his speech, Trump said.
“It’s a great honor to address America’s heroes on this most solemn occasion,” Trump said. “Words cannot express the depths of our gratitude, but I hope that our actions will show you how deeply we care and how strongly we feel about protecting those who protect us.”
“America stands strong with our men and women in blue,” Trump continued. “Believe me, we stand strong together.”
Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and Federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. The Memorial takes place on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in which the Memorial falls. The event is sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police and is implemented by the National FOP Memorial Committee.
Other events of National Police Week include the annual Blue Mass, Candlelight Vigil, Wreath Laying Ceremony, National Police Survivors Conference, Honor Guard Competition, and the Emerald Society & Pipe Band March and Service. The events draw 25,000 to 40,000 law enforcement officers and their families to Washington, D.C. every year.
