#AffirmativeAction Is Debated On Social Media As Donald Trump Takes On College Admission Issue

#AffirmativeAction is trending on social media as news came out that President Donald Trump and his administration are considering the possibility of investigating affirmative-action practices on college campuses. Now, social media users are debating the strengths and weaknesses of having such a system in place in college admissions.

According to a New York Times report citing internal documents from the US Justice Department’s civil rights division, the DOJ is reportedly seeking lawyers who would be tasked with investigating, and possibly suing, higher-education institutions over alleged “intentional race-based discrimination.”

The program, if implemented, would be run out of the civil-rights division’s front office so that Trump’s political appointees, and not the division’s career employees, could oversee its operation. Though not citing any advantage to any specific ethnic group, some critics view it as potentially targeting so-called reverse discrimination against white applicants.

Here are some reactions to #AffirmativeAction on social media. What do you think of the Trump administration’s new focus on affirmative action in college admissions? Can you share with us a story about how it helped or hurt you? Let us know in the comments section.

Affirmative action, as it exists in U.S. colleges and universities, seeks to eliminate discrimination in the higher education admissions process by recruiting and incentivizing traditionally excluded groups like minority students or women.

In defense of Affirmative Action, GQ published an article stating:

People’s outrage over affirmative action is almost always the result of convenient scapegoating. If everyone who claimed that they didn’t get into a school due to affirmative action actually didn’t get into a school for that reason, then you’d think our universities would mostly be made up of people of color, but we all know that’s not the case. It’s just easier for disappointed kids or parents to blame the specter of affirmative action than it is for them to accept that maybe they just didn’t quite make the grade—despite the fact that, systematically speaking, a white student has enjoyed far more racial privilege than the black kid who is getting slightly preferential treatment this one time.

Do you agree with this assessment about affirmative action? Would you like to see the Trump administration take on this issue? Let us know in the comments section.
