President Donald Trump likes winning but maybe not in this case. Trump has been very good for late night television and has even helped them set a record regarding jokes about a president. A report from the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University recently revealed that the current president has been the butt of 1,060 jokes in his first 100 days. That staggering number is more than what was aimed at his predecessors.
In the report, it is stated that Trump has been targeted by more jokes in his first months on the job than former President Barack Obama in 2009 (936 jokes), former President George W. Bush in 2001 (546 jokes), and former President Bill Clinton in 1993 (440 jokes). Leading in jokes against Trump, Stephen Colbert has poked the most fun with 337, followed by Trevor Noah (315), Jimmy Fallon (231) and Jimmy Kimmel (177).
For this study, the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University reviewed more than 2,000 political jokes from the opening monologues on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah from Jan. 20 through April 29, 2017.
“Donald Trump is head and shoulders above the competition as the politician late night comedians most love to hate,” said the CMPA’s Dr. Robert Lichter in a statement.
Some other highlights from that study include Trump being “on track to easily eclipse” previous record-holder former President Bill Clinton, who had 1,717 jokes told about him in 1998, when the Monica Lewinsky scandal dominated the news. Clinton’s tally was higher than any other individual tracked by CMPA from 1992 through 2012.
And, if you like jokes about Trump’s family, they were the butts of an additional 97 jokes, which was more than all Democrats combined. When the Trump family jokes are combined with the 373 jokes that were directed toward other members of his administration, the Trump-related joke total rises to 1,530.
FCC chairman Ajit Pai said that his agency will be looking into complaints made against Colbert for what some labeled a homophobic joke about Trump. Colbert had received backlash from for his joke stating that “The only thing [Trump’s] mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.” Viewers took to social media to declare Colbert’s joke homophobic. The hashtag #FireColbert began spreading around Twitter, along with calls for people to boycott sponsors of the late-night show.
“I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints — and we’ve gotten a number of them — we are going to take the facts that we find and we are going to apply the law as it’s been set out by the Supreme Court and other courts and we’ll take the appropriate action,” Pai told Philadelphia’s Talk Radio 1210 WPHT. “Traditionally, the agency has to decide, if it does find a violation, what the appropriate remedy should be. A fine, of some sort, is typically what we do.”
