California Man Walking Into Haunted House With Chainsaw And Killing 7 People Is Fake News

A California man killing 7 people with a chainsaw at a haunted house in Los Angeles is fake news. There is no truth to a report that a California man walked into a Los Angeles haunted house attraction with a chainsaw and murdered 7 people. This fake news report recirculated being published several years ago.

Where did this fake news originate? The Daily Buzz Live published the article on Oct. 5, 2014, that a man had killed 7 people with a chainsaw at a haunted house in Los Angeles. The article quoted people who had witnessed the attack and included surveillance footage of the incident taken from a security camera that has since been removed from YouTube. You can read the fake news below.

A Los Angeles, California man is in custody, and 7 people are dead after a tragic attack inside an East LA hunted house attraction over the weekend that was caught on surveillance video.

A Hispanic male, 26-year-old Luis Ortega, entered the Texas Chainsaw Massacre House of Horrors on Friday’s opening night wielding a chainsaw.

However, there is no truth to this story, according to Snopes. The video that was provided with the fake news article was real. However, the video did not capture a man killing 7 people with a chainsaw outside of a haunted house in Los Angeles. Rather, it was used to bolster the fake news article.

The video actually showed an incident from February 2012 in which a man was kicked out of a pub in England. In the real incident, Dean Dinnen, 24, was booted from the Endyke Pub in Hull after he refused to put out a cigarette. What followed was the drunk man chasing patrons with a gas powered chainsaw and injuring one woman before patrons were able to stop him in the street.

Following that incident, Dinnen was sentenced to three years in prison for his assault. Snopes explained that the video saw an increase in popularity after it was combined with the false narrative that the man killed 7 people at a haunted house with a chainsaw. The story by The Daily Buzz Live about the haunted house killings is false and the video is an old one repurposed to lend the fake news credibility.

Here are some examples of people sharing the fake news on social media.

The Daily Buzz Live carries a disclaimer explaining that its articles are for “entertainment purposes only” and that while some stories may be “inspired by real news events,” they are “complete fiction.”
