The new Star Wars movie being filmed near Iowa or California with a large number of extras needed is fake news. There is no truth to a series of reports circulating social media that suggested that the new Star Wars film is being shot in Iowa or California and seeking extras. The template reads:
[TOWN], [State] – Reports out of Hollywood this morning are confirming that a portion of the next Star Wars movie will be filmed near [Town], [State]. The undisclosed location near [Town] will represent a previously unknown planet in the Star Wars universe.
No details were released as to exactly when production would take place in the [Town] area but they stated that it should begin no later than next spring. A casting call for extras will be announced well before that time period, however. Local fans of the film series were understandably excited about the news and especially excited about the prospect of becoming an extra in the film after producers made this short statement released to the press earlier today:
“We think that [Town] is a great place to find the hundreds of extras for our alien population and we’re very excited about filming here.”

However, there is no truth to the above story, according to Hoax Alert. That site reported that the fake news recently has been attributed to Defiance, Iowa but also Vista, California or Waterloo, Iowa.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke about how the Star Wars Story Group is shaping the next decade worth of stories in the series.
“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories and we’re looking at narratively where that might go; future stories beyond Episode 9, with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, but we’re also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us to places that we haven’t been yet, and that’s exciting too because it’s a vast galaxy far, far away… The possibilities are endless.”
